FMAMS was originally conceived in 1980 by Mrs. Florence Melton to address the need of Jewish literacy. With the guidance of a team of scholars and educators from The Melton Centre for Jewish Education in the Diaspora at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, an adult curriculum was developed that integrated Jewish practices, history, language, ethics and ideas with classical Judaism and texts.
The two year program consists of 30 classes each year, held weekly for two hours, with a 15 minute break. The curriculum is trans-denominational and seeks to increase individual participation in one's Judaism - to inspire students to explore, experience, challenge and define what Judaism means. There are no prerequisites, grades, or exams.
We offer holiday workshops and celebrations, guest lectures, and field trips. Upon completion of the two years of study, students receive the Hebrew University Certificate of Jewish Study at a graduation ceremony and may continue their Jewish studies in our Melton graduate program.
